Carpenter Ants in Kansas City. We recognize the Carpenter Ant worker as polymorphic, multiple sizes. They all vary greatly in size, between 1/8 to 1/2 inches in length. Their color is Black or combinations of red and black or completely red or brown. Carpenter Ants have a 12-segmented antenna without a club. The Thorax lacks spines, and the profile is evenly rounded on the upper side. The Pedicel is 1-segmented, and the Gaster has an anal opening round, which is surrounded by a circlet of hairs. The stinger is absent, and the workers are capable of emitting a strong formic acid odor.
Damage: External evidence of infestation other than the presence of workers and/or swarmers is the expelling of debris, which consists of sawdust-like shavings and/or fragments of insulation and insect body parts that accumulate below such holes. This is a good indication of an infestation. A gallery of tunnels is formed in the wood, which has a sand-papered appearance or finished off the look. The active galleries are kept clean of debris.
Most of the Carpenter Ant species will establish their first nest in a piece of decayed wood and then will expand into more sound wood. Nests that are located inside are found in wood softened by fungus rot. Carpenter Ant nest can also be found in the ground outdoors. The nest is sometimes mistaken for Fire Ant Nest.
